Frequently Asked Questions.
Answers to what businesses and consumers ask us most — about Halal itself, certification, our testing services, and how to get started.
Halal (حلال) is an Arabic word meaning "permissible" or "lawful" under Islamic law. For food and products, it means the item is free from pork and its by-products, contains no alcohol or intoxicants, was prepared with clean equipment, and — for meat — comes from an animal slaughtered according to Islamic method.
No. "Halal is not just for Muslims, but for everyone." The standards behind Halal certification — cleanliness, traceability, and strict quality control — benefit every consumer, regardless of religion. It's also a growing global market worth over $2 trillion, so certification opens doors commercially, not just religiously.
A product becomes Haram if it contains pork or pork by-products, contains alcohol, or is cross-contaminated with any Haram substance during production, storage, or transport — even if the original ingredients were Halal.
Certification is issued by accredited Halal certification bodies, not by DOST directly — see the list of accredited certifying bodies. Our role is to help you get ready: document review, facility guidance, and laboratory testing that gives you the evidence a certifier will ask for. Start on our Services page or reach out via Contact Us.
It varies by business and certifier, but readiness work through DOST — documentation, testing, and assessment — typically takes 30–45 days depending on the services you need and how quickly required documents are provided.
A HAS manual documents how your business plans, implements, and monitors Halal compliance — policies, an internal Halal committee, auditing procedures, and more. Most certification bodies require one. We offer guidance and a template to help you prepare it — see Materials & Resources.
Our Halal Verification Laboratory offers Porcine DNA Detection (Real-Time PCR, for trace pork in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals) and Alcohol Content Testing (GC-MS / HPLC, for beverages, food, and ingredients).
Typically 3–7 working days from sample submission, depending on the test and current lab volume. We'll confirm an estimated turnaround when you submit your sample.
Samples should be properly packed and labelled, with at least 250g for solid samples or 500mL for liquid samples. Full documentation requirements are listed on our Services page.
